Water Wolves

The Programme

For all Water Wolves enquiries please email Water Wolves.

Water Wolves which is held on Sundays, offering a league where local school or friend based teams can learn & practice skills and then have some game time under the guidance of Sea Wolf coaches and referees.

Swimming Standard Requirements

All players are expected to have a basic swimming level, as we are a water polo club not a swimming school. All players will be assessed during the first session of the term. Players who do not meet the standards will not be permitted to continue in the programme until they can demonstrate the required competency.

Standards:

  • Flippa ball (The pups): 20 metres, with one permitted rest in which the player may briefly roll onto their back before continuing.

  • Mini polo (The Cubs): 40 metres, no breaks permitted.

  • During these assessments, players must not touch the pool floor, walls, lane ropes, or any object that provides support. The assessment focuses on distance and confidence rather than speed.

Swimwear Requirements

  • Players with hair longer than the bottom edge of their water polo cap must wear a swimming cap underneath their polo cap, with hair tucked into the cap.

  • Only tight-fitting, one-piece swimsuits are permitted. Rash shirts, board shorts, and other loose clothing are not allowed.

  • Please note: These swimwear rules are in place for safety. Loose clothing restricts movement and buoyancy, and long hair not secured under a cap can become a hazard during play.

The Pups (Flippa ball)

'Pups' are your littlest members of our pack. From years 3&4 'Pups' will begin to learn the very basics of the game we all love. Based on up to 60-minutes, these kids will play a game and will have skill sessions focused on learning the basics of Water Polo. We keep the pool depth at 1.2m so they can stand as well as swim!

The Cubs (Mini polo)

Once our 'Pups' reach years 5&6 they will graduate to deep water games and will again be with the pack for up to 60-minutes. During this time 'Cubs' will progress from the basics they learnt as 'Pups', developing skills to prepare them to take on the full game of Water Polo. During this time, they will focus on learning to egg beat, correct catching and passing techniques and movement through the water. This helps transition players into Club U12 age grade.

The Water Wolves difference

Even though our games are based on Water Polo and similar to Flippaball, the foundation of Water Wolves is an 'age and stage' development programme. The key differences are:

  • 60-minutes of fun

    • Forget the 20-minute drive to the pool for a 15 minute game. All the kids get 60-minutes of action packed fun.

  • Skills and games

    • There will be no time for getting bored. There's loads of action as the kids get a game and skill sessions, all wrapped up in one.

  • Smaller ball

    • Kids have smaller hands so it makes sense to have a smaller ball. A smaller ball means more touches, and more touches means more fun!

  • Smaller goals

    • Goalkeeping is taught at the best of times. Smaller goals helps with improving goalkeeping technique and for more shooting scenarios to be practiced.

  • Revised ejection area

  • Fouls are part of the game, so we are managing and embracing them by having immediate substitutions and we're not keeping count of fouls. More confidence equals more fun
